2020: 3rd Meeting (Virtual)

On Saturday 21st November 2020, the St John Ophthalmic Association held its first virtual meeting, and the first in the new ‘St John Ophthalmic Case Series’, or ‘SOCS’.

The event was hosted by SOA-USA, and generously supported by the Priory of St John in the USA.

The US Hospitaller, Mr David Pyott, opened the event and introduced the speakers.

.

The first talk was given by Mr David Verity, Order Hospitaller, in which he described the ethos and work of St John Eye Hospital Group, and reviewed the development of the SOA since its foundation 5 years ago.

Following this, Sir Andrew Cash, Chairman of the St John Eye Hospital Group, summarized the strategy of the Board, and introduced Dr Ahmad Ma’ali the CEO of the Hospital Group. Dr Ma’ali described the impact of COVID on SJEHG, updated us on our clinical services, and spoke on our outreach program and regional partnerships.

We then heard two interesting case reports from our Trainees in Jerusalem and Gaza. Dr Hisham Al-Faleet, from Gaza, reminded us of the risk of glaucoma with uncontrolled topical steroid in a child with vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Dr Anne Coleman, immediate past Hospitaller for the Priory in the USA, moderated questions on the case before handing over to the second speaker.

Dr Raja Al-Masri, a trainee in Jerusalem, presented a young patient with rhabdomyosarcoma, and described the surgical and medical management of these very challenging patients.

Dr Suzanne Freitag, Director of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, moderated questions and discussion on the case.

Finally, Mr David Pyott concluded the meeting with a summary and words of thanks to the organizers, the speakers, and our special guests.
