Greetings from Jerusalem. My name is Dr Ahmad Ma’ali, and I am the Chief Executive Officer of the St John Eye Hospital Group.
St John Eye Hospital was established in 1882 to provide very much needed eye care to the most marginalised and disadvantaged people in the Holy Land. Much of our focus has been on service delivery, and we have reached an excellent standard in eye care. We were the first eye hospital in Jerusalem to be awarded the Joint Commission International quality accreditation in 2013.
Faced with this achievement, the Hospital Board felt that quality eye care needs to go hand-in-hand with advances in the quality of education, research and innovation. This required us to have a postgraduate arm to enable us to fulfil this aspiration.
Since its establishment, the St John Ophthalmic Association has played a pivotal role in advancing the hospitals teaching training and research. Thanks to the SOA we have been able to second a number of our doctors and nurses to undertake Fellowships and training both abroad and in Israel.
The St John Ophthalmic Association brings an exciting opportunity for all of us at the hospital Group, and I am confident that with the support of the SOA we shall be able to further and advance the knowledge, skills, and expertise of all our clinicians. We are grateful to all our global partners who have supported the SOA and the Hospital.
Thank you very much.
